When my boyfriend and I decided it was time to renovate our bathroom, we should have taken the time to find a skilled and certified plumber to handle the job. Instead, we took the recommendation of his older brother and hired a guy who we ended up regretting. All we hoped the plumber would do was to install new pipes, drains, fixtures, tub and the surround. My boyfriend and I are rather handy and figured we could complete all of the finish work ourselves. The reason we were tackling the washroom was because the tub and sink and toilet were consistently a problem. We knew that there was a bend in pipes causing issues with drainage. Both of us asked the plumber to simply install a straight connecting pipe between the tub, sink and toilet to ensure smooth flow of wastewater. The plumber kept questioning us about him drywalling, laying down the floor, and painting. We reminded him that we would do that part of the project. My boyfriend and I were out of town for the day. When we got home, our plumber had completed the upgrades to the pipes and had already started putting down the floor. When we caught him at it, we also saw that he’d once again implemented a drainage pipe with a sharp bend in it. Since that wasn’t what we wanted, we told him to tear it all back out and start over. By the time the project was finally done, we were eager for the plumber to leave and never come back. He failed to design the pipes the way we wanted. He failed to properly install the tub or toilet, and they leaked. He also started installing the floor and was putting up the drywall, even though we didn’t want him to. Since my boyfriend and I were suspicious that he did this to hide his errors, we took everything back down and started the whole project over again.
