Every single fall, I take a little while and dedicate my time to preparing the residence for winter. I take care of any kind of necessary repairs or weatherproofing around the house and make sure everything is actually clean. I usually go room by room, trying to find any kind of problems, and wash everything thoroughly from the curtains and windows, to the actual rugs and behind the furniture. I take the opportunity to clean the supply vents for our heating and cooling system, caulk around all of the windows and weatherstrip around all of the doors. Because we face very cold winters in our area, it is important to reduce the possibility for any leaks. Allowing cold air inside will allow for drafts, discomfort, and forces the heating system to work a lot harder. Letting the heated air escape outside is just as bad, resulting in higher electrical power bills. Having a tightly sealed, well-insulated dwelling makes it easier for the furnace to reach and maintain the setting on the thermostat. Because the heater doesn’t need to run as long, it will need less energy and there can be less strain on the components. All of this allows me to save money on my monthly utility bills and also allows me to minimize potential malfunctions. Furthermore, the furnace should last for a longer period. Since the heated air passes completely through the duct system and furnace, it is important that the inner workings are thoroughly clean. I hire a skilled HVAC contractor for proactive service every single fall season. With thorough cleansing, he removes any buildup from contaminants, such as dust, dander, webs, mildew and mold. Not only does this promote healthier quality of air, but also promotes better airflow through the entire system. I am then less likely to face temperature fluctuations and cold spots inside of the winter. I consider this process my fall cleaning responsibilities and it makes for a more enjoyable winter, while I’m trapped inside my residence.
