Last year, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is quite common, but there is really very little known about it. Symptoms are simple. There is chronic, uncontrollable, and debilitating pain. You can also have a severe sensitivity to temperature changes. Whether it is too hot or too cold, it can cause an increase in the pain level. I’ve learned that I needed to have a really good HVAC system to keep me comfortable, and to keep the pain level under control. I have a girlfriend who has migraines, and it’s funny but the doctor told her that a good air conditioner can help to alleviate some of the pain. My sister was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and her doctor told her the same thing. Her disease can be less painful and debilitating if she has constant temperatures, so heating and air conditioning are a necessity for her comfort. I live in the south, where it can be extremely hot, so the air conditioning is a necessity from the very beginning, but with the fibromyalgia, it is a medical necessity. I sometimes wonder about the people who suffered with these same conditions when the air conditioning wasn’t so common. I have a certain amount of respect for those people to be able to live their lives without the easing effects of the air conditioning and heating.
