When my husband and I decided to renovate our bathroom, we should have taken more time to find a reliable and knowledgeable plumber to handle the job. Instead, we took the recommendation of my brother and hired a guy who we ended up hating. All we wanted the plumber to do was install new pipes, drains, and get the tub and surround in place. My husband and I planned to complete all of the finish work ourselves. The reason we were gutting the bathroom was because the tub and toilet were constantly clogged. We figured out that there was a bend in pipes hindering drainage. We asked the plumber to put in a straight connecting pipe between the tub and toilet to promote superior flow of wastewater. The plumber kept asking us about drywalling, laying down the floor, and painting. We kept reminding him that we would handle that part of the project. While my husband and I were out of the house for several hours, our plumber completed the installation of the pipes and started putting down the floor. We caught him at it, and found that he’d once again implemented a drainage system with a sharp bend in it. Since that wasn’t what we asked for, we made him tear it all back out and start over. By the time the project was complete, we just wanted the plumber to leave and never come back. He did not design the pipes the way we wanted. He did not properly install the tub or toilet, and both leaked. He also put down the floor and put up the drywall, even though we didn’t want him to. Since my husband and I were suspicious that he did this to hide his mistakes, we took everything down and ended up doing the whole project over again.
