Today I am an old man, living quietly by myself, with no family and very few friends. My home is on a tropical island beach. It is a peaceful life, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. However, my life has not always been this harmonious. You see, once I was a prisoner. I served several years for committing a thoughtless act of vandalism. That poor choice cost me my freedom. However, that experience gave me a greater sense of appreciation for nature and simple pleasures, and for that, I am grateful. I am also grateful for the man who gave me back the freedom to enjoy my new sense of oneness with nature; my cell mate the HVAC repair man. You see, I was not released from prison, I escaped. My cellmate and I had bunked together for several months. I later learned that he had been sizing me up, trying to decide if I was trustworthy. Then one night he revealed his big secret. He told me he had worked for the contractor who installed the HVAC system at this very prison! Furthermore, he had a plan to use his knowledge of the ventilation system to escape, but he needed my help. We spent many weeks planning and waiting for just the right opportunity. Then, one night, we slipped into an unsecured air vent and disappeared. We thought it best to part ways, so the authorities wouldn’t be able to find us. It has been twenty two years, and I haven’t seen or heard from him since. I owe that air conditioning repairman. I hope he has enjoyed his freedom as much as I have.
