Heater in the basement

Have you ever had to go down in someone’s basement and you just felt like it was creepy? My friend has a basement like that and I think I watch too many horror movies because I really feel like it is haunted.  Before we moved out on my own I would stay at her place and we would go out to the bars, and parties at night. When we got back to her place, I could barely ever sleep. There would be constant creaking and movement coming from downstairs. I never felt threatened, but I did keep a flashlight next to the couch whenever I would sleep over. However, my friend typically laughed at me and  tried to convince me that it was only the furnace turning on and off. I never believed her, especially since I never heard it make noises during the daytime. On one occasion, I woke up in the middle of the night to a loud bang coming from the where the furnace was. It woke my friend up too and we had to grab flashlights to go downstairs to check things out. Apparently, a piece of the vent pipe had rotted out and completely broke off the main unit, causing the loud noise. She immediately shut off the system to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning and called  the HVAC company to come fix the broken piece the next day. Luckily, she didn’t have to go too long without heat. To this day, I don’t know if the piece broke off because the furnace was old, or if the ghosts did it.
